How to get to Kyushu and Okinawa?
In July of this year (year 2000), Japan will organize for the first time
her G8 meeting in province, the region of Kyushu-Okinawa located in the extreme south of the
archipelagos. Japan being a very stretched country, its access is not easy, all the more since
the towns of Tokyo and Osaka, where most of foreigners arrive, own each 2 airports (one for
international flights and another for internal flights) and the venues of meeting are
very scattered (Fukuoka, Miyazaki and Okinawa)
The goal of this page is to explain you how to get to Kyushu-Okinawa region without a hitch
for the route is long and twisted.
Note:
By clicking one of yellow rectangles on the map below,
you can get the following information.

To find the meaning of a geographic term, please use the following search box which will send
a query to our Japanese dictionary of geography and tourism.
In principle, Narita airport is reserved for international flights while Haneda for internal ones
excepting for some ones. If you wish to continue your trip up to Kyushu or Okinawa by plane, take a shuttle
or a train "Airport Limited Express" in the underground of airport building.
If you wish to stay some days at Tokyo, take a train
"Narita Express" which serves Tokyo and Shinjuku stations while "Keisei Sky Liner" serves
Ueno station. You can also choose "Limousine Bus" which serves the main districts of Tokyo.
Finally, if you prefer to get to Fukuoka by train, first go to Tokyo station with "Narita Express"
then take a bullet train there (5 hours of trip). Be aware, you will find rarely a direct train up to Fukuoka.
Otherwise you have to change it at Osaka.
In principle, Kansai airport is reserved for international flights while Itami for internal ones
excepting for some flights.
If you wish to continue your trip up to Kyushu or Okinawa by plane, take "Limousine Bus" between 2 airports
(one hour half of trip).
Itami airport having no railroad station, this is the unique method to link 2 airports.
If you wish to stay some days in Osaka, take one of the following trains:
"JR West Japan" which brings you to JR-Naniwa station or "Nankai dentetsu" to Nanba station.
Finally, if you wish to continue your trip by train to Kyushu, take the direct train "Haruka" from the airport
which brings you to Shin-Osaka station (50 minutes of trip). There, you will find a bullet train
to Fukuoka (2 hours of trip).
You can arrive directly to Fukuoka international airport only from near countries such as
China and Korea. Otherwise, if you are already in Tokyo, take an internal flight at Haneda airport or a bullet
train at Tokyo station (5 hours of trip). If you are already in Osaka, take an internal flight at Itami airport or a bullet
train at Shin-Osaka (new Osaka) station (2 hours of trip).
Since the town owns neither international airport nor bullet trains' station, your choice is limited.
If you are in Tokyo, take an internal flight at Haneda airport.
If you are in Osaka, take an internal flight at Itami airport.
If you are already in Fukuoka, take an internal flight at Fukuoka airport
or an ordinary train at Hakata station.
Since the town is located on Okinawa island, you can get there only by plane.
If you are in Tokyo, take an internal flight at Haneda airport.
If you are in Osaka, take an internal flight at Itami airport.
If you are already in Miyazaki, try rather to go to Okinawa via Fukuoka, for
there are few flights to Okinawa from Miyazaki airport.
Once, you are at Naha airport located in the south of Okinawa island,
go up to the north by taking a short section of expressway.
The town is located at the end.
